Product Description

SCI FLIES Dry Flies – Terrestrial Pack

The SCI FLIES Dry Flies Terrestrial Pack is a premium selection of highly buoyant terrestrial fly patterns designed for anglers targeting trout, bass, and yellowfish when land-based insects become an important part of the fish's diet.

Terrestrial insects such as beetles, ants, grasshoppers, and other land-dwelling insects can provide an excellent source of food for fish during the warmer months. This carefully selected collection brings together seven proven terrestrial patterns, giving anglers a versatile range of surface presentations for rivers, streams, and stillwaters.

The pack contains 21 flies in total — 3 of each of the 7 featured patterns: Kaufman Stimulator, DDD, Hi Float Beetle, Hi Vis Beetle, Flying Ant, Joe's Hopper, and Foam Wing Hopper.

From highly buoyant attractor patterns to realistic beetle and ant imitations, the assortment allows anglers to adapt their presentation according to insect activity, water conditions, and feeding behaviour.

Included Fly Patterns

1. Kaufman Stimulator

The Kaufman Stimulator is a heavily hackled, high-floating attractor pattern with an elk-hair wing. Its substantial profile allows it to imitate a variety of larger terrestrial insects, including stoneflies, caddis, and grasshoppers.

Its excellent buoyancy also makes it particularly effective as the dry fly in a dry-and-dropper setup, where it can support a smaller nymph underneath.

Key Features:

  • Highly buoyant attractor pattern.

  • Elk-hair wing.

  • Heavily hackled profile.

  • Suitable for larger terrestrial insects.

  • Excellent dry-and-dropper indicator fly.

2. DDD – Duckworth's Dargle Delight

The DDD (Duckworth's Dargle Delight) is a renowned South African terrestrial pattern and a proven choice for trout and other freshwater species. Traditionally tied with spun klipspringer hair, it creates an attractive, high-floating profile on the surface.

It is particularly effective around reed beds, rocky banks, overhanging vegetation, and other areas where terrestrial insects are likely to enter the water.

Key Features:

  • Classic South African terrestrial pattern.

  • High-floating design.

  • Spun klipspringer-hair construction.

  • Suitable for rivers and stillwaters.

  • Effective around structure and banks.

3. Hi Float Beetle

The Hi Float Beetle is a durable foam-bodied beetle imitation designed to remain on the surface while providing an attractive terrestrial profile.

Its foam construction provides excellent buoyancy and makes it well suited to fishing areas where beetles are an important food source.

Key Features:

  • High-floating foam construction.

  • Durable terrestrial profile.

  • Designed to imitate beetles.

  • Excellent surface visibility.

  • Suitable for trout, bass, and yellowfish.

4. Hi Vis Beetle

The Hi Vis Beetle combines the effectiveness of a traditional foam beetle with an enhanced high-visibility indicator section. The bright top section makes the fly easier to track on the water, particularly in choppy conditions, glare, or at longer casting distances.

Key Features:

  • High-floating foam beetle.

  • High-visibility indicator section.

  • Easier to track on the surface.

  • Excellent for rough or reflective water.

  • Effective terrestrial imitation.

5. Flying Ant

The Flying Ant imitates winged ants that become available to fish during seasonal ant activity. Its segmented body profile creates a recognisable terrestrial silhouette and provides a natural-looking surface presentation.

Flying-ant patterns can be particularly effective when fish are actively feeding on ants that have fallen onto the water.

Key Features:

  • Imitates flying/winged ants.

  • Distinct segmented body profile.

  • Designed for surface presentation.

  • Excellent during ant activity and terrestrial hatches.

  • Suitable for trout and other surface-feeding species.

6. Joe's Hopper

Joe's Hopper is a traditional grasshopper pattern with a distinctive combination of mottled turkey-tail wings, a yellow body, and a brown-and-grizzly hackle collar.

Unlike modern foam hopper patterns, its traditional materials provide a softer, more natural-looking presentation on the water while imitating one of the most important summer terrestrial food sources.

Key Features:

  • Traditional grasshopper imitation.

  • Mottled turkey-tail wing.

  • Yellow body.

  • Brown-and-grizzly hackle.

  • Natural surface profile.

  • Excellent summer terrestrial pattern.

7. Foam Wing Hopper

The Foam Wing Hopper is a modern, durable grasshopper imitation designed around buoyant closed-cell foam. Its robust construction allows it to remain on the surface and makes it particularly useful when fishing in windy conditions or turbulent water.

Its buoyancy also makes it suitable for use as the dry fly in a dry-and-dropper rig.

Key Features:

  • High-floating foam construction.

  • Durable grasshopper profile.

  • Excellent buoyancy in rough water.

  • Suitable for windy conditions.

  • Can support a weighted dropper.

  • Effective summer terrestrial imitation.

Key Features

  • 21-fly terrestrial selection.

  • 3 of each of 7 proven terrestrial patterns.

  • Includes beetles, ants, grasshoppers, and attractor patterns.

  • Highly buoyant designs for surface fishing.

  • Suitable for trout, bass, and yellowfish.

  • Excellent selection for summer terrestrial activity.

  • Suitable for rivers, streams, and stillwaters.

  • Multiple profiles allow anglers to adapt to changing conditions.

  • Several patterns can be used in dry-and-dropper presentations.

Fishing Applications

The SCI FLIES Terrestrial Pack is particularly effective during warm-weather periods when terrestrial insects become a significant food source.

For the best results, work terrestrial patterns around areas where insects naturally enter the water, including:

  • Grassy riverbanks

  • Overhanging vegetation

  • Reed beds

  • Rocky banks

  • Lake margins

  • Undercut banks

  • Areas beneath trees and bushes

  • Structure where terrestrial insects may fall into the water

A slightly more deliberate landing can be effective with larger terrestrial patterns such as hoppers and the DDD, as the disturbance can resemble a land-based insect falling onto the surface.

Dry-and-Dropper Fishing

Several of the larger, highly buoyant patterns in this selection can be used as the dry fly in a dry-and-dropper setup. The buoyant Stimulator, DDD, and Foam Wing Hopper are particularly useful when anglers want a visible surface fly while simultaneously presenting a nymph below.

This approach allows anglers to cover both surface-feeding and subsurface fish with a single rig.
