Product Description

SCI FLIES YELLOWFISH VAAL RIVER NYMPHS

The SCI FLIES Yellowfish Vaal River Fly Pack is a carefully curated selection of 7 proven fly patterns specifically chosen for targeting hard-fighting Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellowfish throughout the Vaal River system.

This versatile selection combines buoyant dry flies for surface activity and dry-dropper presentations with weighted bead-head nymphs designed to reach yellowfish feeding in deeper channels, runs and pocket water. With a mixture of terrestrial, caddis, mayfly and attractor patterns, this pack gives anglers the flexibility to adapt to changing river conditions and feeding behaviour.

PACK BREAKDOWN

SURFACE & DRY-DROPPER PATTERNS

These high-visibility dry flies are useful when yellowfish are actively feeding near the surface and can also be used as the top fly in a dry-dropper setup, helping suspend a subsurface nymph below.

1. Elk Hair Caddis – Cream

A classic and highly buoyant caddis imitation designed to ride high on the surface. The cream coloration provides good visibility while presenting a natural caddis profile, making it particularly useful around fast-flowing water and river seams.

2. Black Gnat Parachute

A versatile parachute-style dry fly designed to imitate small terrestrial insects, gnats and midges. The parachute post improves visibility, making the fly easier to track while presenting a compact profile to surface-feeding yellowfish.

3. Foam Wing Hopper – Yellow

A durable terrestrial grasshopper imitation featuring a buoyant foam wing. Its high-floating construction makes it well suited to choppy riffles and warmer months, when grasshoppers and other terrestrial insects become an important food source.

SUBSURFACE NYMPHS & MICRO-LARVAE

These patterns are designed for the subsurface feeding zone, where yellowfish frequently feed on aquatic larvae and nymphs being dislodged from rocks by the river current.

4. Green Rockworm (W) – Chartreuse

A prominent caddis larva imitation and an excellent choice for Vaal River yellowfish. The weighted construction helps the fly reach deeper feeding zones, while the bright chartreuse colour provides a strong visual trigger in moving water.

5. Mustard Caddis (BB) – Mustard

A classic yellowfish caddis pattern featuring a Brass Bead (BB) for added weight. Its mustard coloration provides a natural caddis-larva profile, while the weighted head helps the fly get down quickly and maintain contact with deeper feeding zones.

6. GRHE (BB) – Olive

The Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear is a highly versatile general-purpose nymph. This olive variation combined with a brass bead creates a natural, buggy profile capable of imitating a variety of aquatic nymphs and other subsurface food sources.

7. Flash Gun (BB) – UV / Natural

A reflective attractor nymph featuring UV dubbing and a natural-looking profile. The combination of subtle imitation and added flash can help attract yellowfish when visibility is reduced or when an additional visual trigger is needed.
